Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi created a stir for a brief while in Bangalore with his remarks at the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP-led Y S Yediyurappa government on Monday.
''Karnataka would follow the Gujarat model'', Modi said on the sidelines of ceremony in Bangalore, leading media to interpret that he was referring to the state government following 'Hindutava' agenda as was the case in Gujarat.
However, BJP President Rajnath Singh was quick to clarify that Modi was only referring to the Gujarat's ''model of development'' for a clue from by the Karanataka government. said.

Muslims demand 14 seats from Cong in Gujarat
Ahmedabad (PTI): Ticket
seekers from the minority community have demanded at least 14 tickets
from the Congress in the Gujarat Assembly election schedules to be held
on December 11 and 16. The
demand has brought the Congress under pressure as the minority community
voters this year have more options available in the form of Bahujan Samaj
Party and New Socialist Movement who have also decided to contest the
elections. "We
had put forward a demand before the party leadership that tickets should
be given to Muslim candidates in at least 14 constituencies where the
population of the community is more than 35 per cent," Gujarat Congress
vice-president J V Momin said.

Gujarat riot castaways vent ire
Most of the foot soldiers
of the 2002 riots came from lower castes of the central Gujarat region.
They did rioting, killing and went on to become a votebank in the elections
that followed. But now as the Assembly polls draw near, this votebank
is angry. The money and legal support they were promised has vanished
and instead they are facing prison time and convictions.

of any prominent riot case from this region like the Best Bakery, Chalali,
Ghodasar or Eral case and the surnames are likely to be Parmar, Barjod,
Damor - names of prominent OBC, Dalit and tribal castes. Now as legal
activism leads to 800 fresh arrests and convictions, it's a votebank that
is getting restless. ''There is a strong feeling among them that they
have been used particularly against Muslims, they were told that they
would be helped in whatever form in future, be it court cases or whatever.
That didn't happen. That's the reason they could again go back to the
Congress fold,'' said Dinesh Shukla, political analyst.

was because Haren was a transparent and efficient man, whom Modi thought
of as a threat to his power. Haren was opposed to the worship of any individual,
and so became a thorn in Modi's flesh. He was the only BJP MLA in Gujarat
who did not act according to Modi's will.

NHRC To Seek CBI Enquiry
"The National
Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decided to direct an inquiry by the
CBI into the whole episode in the light of accusations made in the programme
"Operation Kalank" on the communal violence in Gujarat,"
the Commission said in a release. The Commission's directive comes after
it viewed the tape sent by the electronic channel, which was broadcast
on October 25, 2007."The allegations had far-reaching implications
and raised vital constitutional issues, which need to be promptly addressed
in the interest of all," the Commission said. The Gujarat government
has been directed to communicate its consent for CBI investigation of
the authenticity of the tapes and the allegations made therein to the
Central government and the Commission within two weeks, the release said.

HC dismisses Zakia’s FIR petition against
Modi
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat
High Court today dismissed the petition filed by Zakia Jafri wife of slain
former MP Ehsan Jafri and the Citizens for Peace and Justice seeking an
order directing the police to lodge an FIR against Chief Minister Narendra
Modi and 62 others for their involvement in the Gujarat riots of 2002.
Hearing the matter, a single judge bench of Justice M R Shah directed
the petitioners to seek the alternative remedy available, which is making
the application for the same before a judicial magistrate. The court said
that it couldn't direct the police to lodge an FIR as long as there was
an alternative remedy available.

Civil Society Protests in Gujarat
More than a thousand
citizens from all walks of life demonstrated on Thursday at the Gandhi
Statue in the heart of Ahmedabad, to register their moral outrage at the
shocking disclosures made in the Tehelka-AajTak expose on the post-Godhra
Carnage of 2002. The protestors strongly and vocally demanded that:
1. The Central Government
should issue an Ordinance suitably amending the provision of the Delhi
Police Establishment Act which requires the consent of the State Government
for investigating any matter by the CBI and immediately order the entire
matter be investigated by the CBI;
2. The BJP as the principal party in power at the Centre then, and in
the State as well, take moral responsibility for the crimes committed
in 2002, and issue a strong condemnation of those involved in the crimes
and shown in the tapes;
3. The State administration take immediate steps to cancel the bail of
all those named in the tapes, viz. Babu Bajrangi, Jaydeep Patel, and all
others accused in the various cases related to post-Godhra violence, who
have been caught on tape confessing to the same, and who are currently
out on bail;
4. There be a re-telecast of the expose, since most of the State have
been unable to view the same, on account of the unconstitutional ban on
the channels for more than 24 hours;
5. That all public prosecutors and judges in all cases related to 2002,
be re-examined for their proximity or connection to Sangh Parivar outfits,
and make fresh appointments;
6. The police officers named in the tapes be suspended forthwith, and
legal proceedings be initiated against them.
Three demonstrators
were taken into custody, following which they went on a massive rally
to the Navrangpura Police Station to register their complaint against
the highhandedness of the police. The demonstrators spent almost two hours
at the Navrangpura Police Station when the Police decided to arrest fifteen
of them without any substantial reason. Prominent among those arrested,
were Mr. Hiren Gandhi (Theatre Activist) and Dr. Saroop Dhruv (Activist
and Academician) who were among the key-organisers of the dharna.

NHRC views Tehelka tapes on Gujarat riots
The National Human
Rights Commission on Wednesday viewed the Tehelka expose on Gujarat riots
aired recently in a private news channel and is likely to take a decision
on the future course of action on Thursday. Taking suo motu cognisance
of the sting operation, the NHRC had asked Aaj Tak news channel to submit
the two tapes before it and the panel received it on Tuesday.

Gujarat riots were inhuman, says Sonia

riots, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said that the “recent expose
revealed that what had happened in Gujarat was inhuman". She
also made it clear that her party would not pull any punches in taking

Tehelka Tapes filed in Gujarat HC
PRESS RELEASE
Mrs. Zakia Nasim Ahsan Jafri has filed an affidavit urging Justice MR
Shah of the Gujarat High Court to take cognisance of Tehelka's Operation
Kalank in the case filed demanding registration of an FIR against Narendra
Modi and 62 others. Mrs Jaffri and Citizens for Justice and Peace had
filed this petition on May 1, 2007 and arguments had been completed in
early September 2007 (Special Criminal Application No 421 of 2007) . The
matter is pending judgement in the Gujarat high court.
Stating in the
affidavit that she is a victim survivor who lost her husband in a mass
carnage at Gulberg society on February 28, 2002, Mrs Jaffri says that
she has asked for an FIR to be registered against Shri Modi and others
on grounds of mass murder and criminal conspiracy. Now,
Mrs Jaffri states, following the Tehelka expose, telecast by the electronic
media on 25.10.2007 that reaffirms the allegations made by the petitioners
as also the fresh allegations against other accused, there is even stronger
evidence against the chief minister his cabinet, other conspirators in
the state cabinet and IAS and IPS officials. This evidence needs to be
considered by the high court that is deliberating the matter.

Gujarat riots: 8 get life term
A Godhra sessions
court on Tuesday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for one of
Gujarat's most brutal riots in Eral during the post-Godhra riots. The
court convicted 11 of the 40 accused, but acquitted the remaining 29.
Chandradeep Parmar, former BJP president Kalol taluka panchayat, and some
VHP leaders were among the eight people convicted for burning a family
alive after raping two girls.

Govt to meet on news channel blackout
New Delhi: Information
and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi is expected to convene
a meeting on Tuesday to review the blackout of news channels in Gujarat
after they aired a sting on Godhra riots of 2002.
The District
Collector of Ahmedabad ordered the channels off air on October 26. CNN-IBN,
IBN7, NDTV and Aaj Tak were taken off air after they aired the sting.
The administration justified the move claiming the channels were violating
Clause 5 of the Cable TV Network Regulation Act.

Gujarat govt submits Tehelka CD
The Gujarat government
has submitted a CD of the Tehelka expose to the Nanavati Commission, which
is inquiring into the Godhra violence and the following riots. What’s
surprising is that the state government, which was the target of the Tehelka
sting, has itself submitted a TV recording of the expose to the commission.
Sources say the state government has asked the commission to put the tapes
on record. While the state Law Minister, Ashok Bhatt refused to comment
on the issue, many insiders believe that with elections round the corner,
the move was politically loaded. Chief Minister Narendra Modi is trying
to send a signal that he didn't fear any inquiry.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday declined to comment on the Tehelka
exposè on the post-Godhra communal riots in the State in 2002.
Without referring
to the exposè, Mr. Modi said he had decided not to react to the

Religious leaders shocked at Tehelka revelations
Mumbai : Several spiritual
and religious leaders including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Swami Agnivesh
Saturday said that those behind Gujarat's communal violence of 2002 "should
be ex-communicated from the Hindu fold". While
lauding the courage of the Tehelka journalists for its undercover operation

Arvind Pandya Resigns, Files FIR Against Reporter

Arvind Pandya, Gujarat
State Counsel who admitted on camera how he hopes to subvert the cause
of justice in the Gujarat carnage, has resigned from his position. Among
other things, Pandya said on camera that “Were Modi not a minister,
he would have burst bombs”. In a press conference, he claimed that
the undercover reporter had given him a “script” to read,
which is what is seen on the tape. Pandya has also filed an FIR against
Aaj Tak Gujarat Bureau Chief Dhimant Purohit, under several sections ranging
from “criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and fraud”. He
claimed that he had very good relations with Purohit and he misused them.
Purohit has so far not been given a copy of the FIR by police authorities.
Purohit has decribed the allegations as false and baseless.

Teesta Setalvad moves SC on Tehelka sting
Social activist Teesta
Setalvad has moved the Supreme Court, urging it to look into the Tehelka
sting. Teesta, in her application, said Tehelka records should be used
as evidence in the riot cases. She has also sought action against those
people who have made on-camera confessions. Setalvad has also urged the
court to speed up the riot cases pending since November 2003 because the
security of the witnesses was at stake.

Murder Will Out: Responses in the Press
The English press
in India has been playing this story in a muted, cautious manner. Strong
statements are only coming from the most improbable quarter.The
Hindu gave it four-inches on Pg 12, where they reprinted a newswire report.
The Hindustan Times ran their own story on Pg 13, emphasising that “Tehelka
says… but we don’t.” The Indian Express gave it the
most inches on Pg 1, under the header: “Sting traps footsoldiers
of Gujarat riots boasting about killings with state support,” but
made no editorial statements. Who
would have guessed that it would be the Times of India that, under the
header “Guj Rioters Brag About Killings,” actually had the
guts to say this: “Indeed the phrase “state-sponsored genocide,”
often bandied about by activists, may not be an exaggeration if these
claims of rioters are correct.”

A reminder about an unfinished business
EDITORIAL
While Tehelka
has jogged our memories and shown us what is deemed to be another visible
and horrifying aspect of the Gujarat riots, the job is pending with the
Nanavati Commission. Surely, any delay in starting the judicial process
against the killers and their abettors — and there were abettors
in the state official machinery — will be a delay in bringing justice
not only to victims in Gujarat but also to the nation. Instead of sinking
into the quicksand of politics that is bound to develop from the Tehelka
‘exposé’ in the months leading up to the December polls
in Gujarat, let the Commission findings be expedited fast. Before a very
real genocide turns into a myth that turns into a rumour that no hand
of the law will be able to touch.

After sting, Modi takes on media
A day after Tehelka
magazine's sting operation revealing gory details of the Gujarat riots
in 2002, news channels in Ahmedabad were the first target of Chief Minister
Narendra Modi's anger.Ahmedabad collector Dhananjay Dwivedi ordered the
channels showing Tehelka expose to go off air in the city. He said airing
of the sting could disturb communal peace in Ahmedabad.Reacting to the
move, the Election Commission has asked for an explanation from the collector
for banning the channels.

Congress wary of all-out attack

to Gujarat elections, even as the party on Friday called for Chief Minister
Narendra Modi's resignation in the wake of televised confessions of members
of saffron family that it was a state-sponsored genocide. While spokesperson
Jayanthi Natarajan said called for Modi's head to save the constitution
and the civilised society, she carefully avoided bringing the Centre into
picture, putting the ball in the court of judiciary. Insiders termed the
initial reaction as "mandatory", stressing party is not interested
in carrying it further, lest it whips up a Hindu sentiment. The party

showed Hindu activists acknowledging their roles in the killings and detailing

'Tehelka footage can be taken as evidence'
New Delhi: Blaming
the Narendra Modi government for the 2002 Gujarat communal violence, CPM
on Friday said the Tehelka tapes showing "shocking and graphic details"

The Echo Chamber
Moments after 7 pm
yesterday, we knew the Gujarat riots formed the subject matter of the
latest Tehelka expose. And, without sitting through the television coverage
on Aaj Tak and Headlines Today, you knew broadly what the reaction was
going to be. Scanning blogs, comments on message boards, I am not disappointed:
the reaction is exactly on the lines I had anticipated. It is the predictably
ad hominem nature of public discourse that I find most startling—
no matter what is being discussed, the echo chamber, in an impressive
display of collective paranoia, turns it around into an us versus them
debate, in which the actual issue becomes irrelevant except as a peg to
hang such diatribes on.

Poll: Will law catch up with Modi?

is: will the long arm of the law finally catch up with chief scientist

The [Tehelka] revelations
undoubtedly confirm the Supreme Court’s unprecedented strictures
against Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The apex court had described Gujarat
government as “the modern day Nero’’ while pointing
out the State’s inertia in apprehending the key accused in a post-Godhra

Left parties reacted
strongly to the findings of the sting operation by Tehelka magazine, and
asked the UPA government to act immediately and put Gujarat Chief Minister
Narendra Modi behind bars as “he is the main culprit and organiser
of the Gujarat genocide.” They said what had been in the realm of
speculation has now been proved beyond doubt. CPI leaders AB Bardhan and
Shamim Faizi said Modi has no right to continue in the office now.

"Dirty Tricks", Says BJP
BJP spokesman Prakash
Javedekar said the "dirty tricks department" of the Congress
was working to tarnish BJP at the time of the Assembly elections in Gujarat.
The Party accused Tehelka of acting as "CIA (Congress Investigating
Agency) and it was a collusive sting which could hardly be called investigative
journalism."
