The Unfaithful

Film: Bewafaa
Director: Dharmesh Darshan
Starring: Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen, Manoj Bajpai

Bewafaa…bewakoof. That’s my one-word review for the film Dharmesh Darshan, who directed blockbusters like Raja Hindustani and Dhadkan, returns with a confused and mouldy piece of cinema. Bewafaa is an 18-reel long drag with not one memorable moment or scene. Sigh.

While the story itself is quite dull, the screenplay is just absurd. Kareena is a young girl staying with a starchy set of parents, Kabir Bedi and Nafisa Ali, in Montreal, Canada. So what’s she doing there? All we know is that she is seeing Akshay Kumar, a budding singer with blond sideburns and chin hair, who plays on boats while waiting for the big break. Then arrives Kareena’s big sister Sushmita Sen, in a special appearance, all the way from Delhi. She is five months pregnant and excited since she has had two miscarriages already.

For a while Akshay and sisters wander around Montreal mouthing bad dialogue and promoting tourism. Since they are all being paid a lot of money they sing another song. Now what? Let’s get husband Anil Kapoor in and knock-off Sushmita Sen. Inject some emotion and drama. So Sushmita dies, just when she has delivered twin girls. The parents get Kareena to marry Anil and go to Delhi. The sweet docile sister splits without even informing her popstar lover. Poor chap.

Three years later, Kareena is a bored rich housewife, living in a palatial mansion with many fancy cars. She has everything except a loving husband, who broods around thinking of Sushmita. Poor Kareena tries every sati-savitri stunt to get husband interested, including dressing like her sister. Doesn’t work. So she looks after the girls and waits for the story to move. Then one day Akshay returns and they start to meet again. He is now Indian Raja, a big popstar, but his heart still beats for Kareena.

Enters Anil Kapoor’s old friend — a loud Manoj Bajpai with a screechy wife Shamita Shetty. Then a series of coincidences take place and everyone keeps meeting one another accidentally. Akshay and Kareena meet furtively, sans any chemistry or joy. Then a couple of songs later, Kareena is asked to choose her true love. To make it even more bizarre Anil Kapoor says he knows everything. So who does Kareena choose? If you are still interested go watch the movie. But be warned Bewafaa is an old formula which you may have seen before.

The music is catchy, but the songs have been picturised in the same old boring way. The direction is unimaginative, the dialogues too wordy. The unkindest cut? Midway through the film the spunky, gorgeous Kareena stops smiling. Well, so does the audience.
