While Singh, who is also TMC‚Äôs north region in-charge, refuses to comment on the decision, he has expressed his gratitude towards the community leaders. ‚ÄúThis is a matter of pride for me. I respect the feeling of people of my community and will try to fulfill their expectations,‚ÄĚ Singh says. The decision has also been welcomed by the Haryana wing of his party.
On 17 March, representatives of various Punjabi organisations in Haryana met at Rohtak where it was decided that Singh was the strongest leader from the community and a resolution was passed declaring him as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming state elections.
‚ÄúAll Punjabi organisations have expressed their desire to fight the assembly elections under the leadership of community‚Äôs senior leader Kanwar Deep Singh Bawa,‚ÄĚ says Harish Chandra Ajaad, President of Punjabi Mahashakti Manch Haryana. ‚ÄúThe community will give wholehearted support to KD Singh.‚ÄĚ
The Punjabi community plans to field candidates at 50 assembly constituencies. ‚ÄúSoon, representatives of all Punjabi organisations of the state will launch a statewide campaign to bring the community under one banner in support of KD Singh,‚ÄĚ says Anil Sethi, Senior leader of Kaithal Punjabi community.
As the second most spoken language community in Haryana, the Punjabi vote is important to win any election in the state. In that context, the coming together of the community to declare Singh as their candidate is bound to have an impact in the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and perhaps boost Trinamool Congress’s chance.
