I’m not being very original in stating that a sarkar that cannot take care of its youth is damned. And this sarkar together with its offshoots in Uttar Pradesh is turning out to be nothing short of destroyers! Look at what has been happening on the campus of the Benaras Hindu University (BHU). Not very different from what took place on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University in February 2016 and also earlier this year at the Delhi University’s Ramjas college. Students are being hounded and thrashed for speaking out against the political mafia that’s hell bent on making more than intrusions into the campus. Protesting voices throttled. Academic atmosphere wrecked if not destroyed. Sheer muscle power prevailing.
In the backdrop of the rising cases of molestations and related crimes against the girl students of BHU, one is forced to ask the Yogi sarkar about what happened to the brigades he had set up rather too enthusiastically to crush the supposed Romeos. Were his anti-Romeo squads meant to settle, rather unsettle, only young men from a particular minority community or were they in operation for the larger interest of the Pradesh he’s ruling, rather misruling?
It is disturbing to see how the young are surviving in Uttar Pradesh, where goons can enter right into a university campus and do what they wish to and then even manage to get going. No action is taken against them. They are not touched. On the contrary, it’s the victims — the girl students of BHU — who are attacked and thrashed by police waalas! Imagine, if this is taking place in full public view on the university campus of BHU then what would be the fate of lesser known universities, colleges and schools of the state?
In fact, violence seems so well-seeped right into the Right Wing rulers of the day that just last week Sangeeta Varshney, BJP Mahila Morcha President of Aligarh, was caught on camera repeatedly slapping a young woman. Why? Because that girl had befriended a Muslim boy. Well, this is where our thought process has reached, so low and narrow, that no amount of sermons can help. After all, till the mind and soul is not cleansed no amount of BJP brooms swish-swashing dust from here to there can help. Where can all the supposed development theories carry us to, when divisions and violence and double or triple speak come in the way?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the state of Uttar Pradesh is going through the worst phase in its history. There have been reported cases of hundreds of children and even the not-so-young dying in various government hospitals of the state. The survivors are not sure what new forms of infections and diseases have hit them as living conditions are reaching an all-time low.
News reports of the last few weeks carry details of how children studying in the various schools of Uttar Pradesh are going through hellish situations as teachers and principals are turning killers. Are schools getting ‘developed’ into thanas, as there are more and more cases of children getting thrashed and humiliated? Several are on the brink of killing themselves even in the supposed well-known schools. Recently, a young boy named Arsh Mohammed of DPS Kalyanpur, Kanpur tried to kill himself because of the harassment he was facing in his school. In his statement he has blamed four teachers and also the principal of the school. He has stated that his class teacher was bullying him to such an extent that it got unbearable. In fact she also tried to find a gun in his school bag!
This boy, still in a critical condition, is battling for his life in a Kanpur hospital. Well, thankfully a private hospital and not in a sarkari butcherkhana. Yes, Yogi sarkar might have been successful in forcibly closing down the erstwhile officially recognized slaughterhouses but the government hospitals of Uttar Pradesh are now getting nick named slaughterhouses. What is going to do to stop that? The masses are disgusted and fed up seeing the rising numbers of the dying or dead.
Taking you back to this Kanpur boy’s attempted suicide case where he has said that his classmates kept away from him because the class teacher told them that he carried a gun in his bag. Is this in tune with today’s hyped anti-Muslim propaganda getting unleashed not just in UP but all over? As though Muslims are nothing but a terror striking lot, carrying guns and all possible killing bandobast. With this vicious propaganda in the backdrop or foreground, one can well imagine the hell the students would be undergoing every single day.
Mind you, these are the few reported cases. Many more unreported ones would be dying a slow death. There ought to be a probe by an apolitical body to find out what’s been happening right inside educational institutions of the state — right from schools to colleges to universities. It is apparent that something or everything seems to be amiss.
There are also reports of encounters taking place in Uttar Pradesh. The state police has conducted 420 encounters with alleged criminals, killing 15 in less than six months of the Yogi sarkar. We are all too well aware of the killer cops but who all are getting killed and why? Can these official killings be justified? Can these killings be termed State-unleashed terror?
During his election campaign, Yogi was seen mouthing on the small screen words along the strain that he wouldn’t let Uttar Pradesh go the Kashmir way. Well, he seems to be doing exactly that! Messing up this Pradesh! Where’s the transparency and where’s the accountability? Deaths and more deaths of not just human forms but also of institutions are taking place on a daily basis.
Who ever thought that even full- fledged educational institutions like the BHU will see this level of police violence on unarmed women students.
Where are all the human rights forums? Time to cry out — enough is enough!
