While the Karnataka Police is on the hunt to nab the killers, protests have erupted in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Chennai.
Â Following the murder, police commissioner T Suneel Kumar has directed all DCPs to erect check posts across the city.
“Three special teams set up to crack the case are on the lookout for the suspected assailants. We are taking the movements of people and vehicles at check posts and inter-state borders,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) M.N. Anucheth.
The incident happened when Lankesh, after parking her car outside the gate of her residence was walking to the main entrance.
The killers fired at least seven rounds.
According to the police, three bullets hit her in the head, neck, and chest and four struck the front wall of the house. Lankesh died on the spot.
While condemning the brutal death of the senior journalists, many activists and supporters of Lankesh protested in Bengaluru and other cities.
Many politicians also condemned the murder and spoke about it.
Â “The prime minister is a skilled Hindutva politician. Whatever he says has two meanings,” said the Congress vice-president. “It is very sad that a journalist against fanaticism was killed. The entire country is with her. Truth cannot be suppressed,” said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
“I have spoken to the chief minister and the general secretary of the AICC. The chief minister has said that those responsible would be caught and punished.”
Â “People say that the prime minister is quiet. The point is the entire ideology is to silence voices,” “Sometimes, under pressure, the prime minister makes statements. But the entire ideology is this,” he added.
