Though the contest seems to be mainly between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, all the key political parties are trying their luck in the smallest but crucial bypoll, which will be held on April 23.
BJP, which recently emerged as a big winner in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Assembly Elections and also formed governments in Mizoram and Goa â currently rules three municipal corporations on the Indian capital. âBJPâs recent victory in other states will have a positive impact on Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, Itâs very important for BJP to win this election,â said Sudhanshu Mittal of BJP.
It will be the first full-fledged municipal poll outing for the ruling AAP. In 2015, AAP had won 67 seats in Delhi Assembly election and BJP had won only three seats out of 70 member assembly. Will the history repeat itself in the upcoming bypoll will be clear only on April 25, when the results will be declared?
This is the second civic polls in the city after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was divided in to three zones south , north and east MCD in 2012. Many MCD projects are still pending. Rani Jhansi Flyover, which was started in 2008, has got stuck and delayed. Shadara Lake project, which started in 2012, still remain incomplete. Balakram Hospital in Timarpur was started in 2002 but yet not completed. Amusement park in Tahirpur and Jungpura multi-level parking are two other projects that are awaiting completion.
Many residentsâ welfare associations seem to be unhappy with the work of the MCD, which is currently being handled by BJP. The anti-incumbency factor may go against them.
The saffron party has decided to bring Yogi Adityanath to campaign in MCD elections. There are many other star leaders and celebrities who will campaign for BJP in the byelections. Recently, BJP chief Amit Shah had asked party workers to ensure BJPâs victory in the civic polls also. While addressing party workers he said winning in the civic elections will help the party to strengthen its grip in the Capital. BJPâs defeat in Delhiâs 2015 Assembly election is like a black spot on the party. Now it doesnât want to leave any chance for its victory.
AAP, which faced defeat in Punjab and Goa, is campaigning hard for the MCD elections as they know these bypoll may act as a stepping stone for the next assembly elections. All the political parties are trying to woo Delhi voters with several promises. AAP party supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised people to make Delhi like London, which has invited lots of criticism from other opposition parties. Kejriwal has also promised that house tax will be abolished if AAP wins the elections.
âOur promise on house tax will benefit us in elections. We will improve hospital and education system which is already in a bad condition,â said AAP senior leader Sanjay Singh.
AAP Party failure in Punjab and Goa he says, âWe tried our best in campaigning and we have analyzed reasons of our defeat. But the way we got a victory in Delhi assembly elections in the same way we will have landslide victory in MCD elections alsoâ.
Congress has promised to make Delhi cleanest and most beautiful city in the world. âWe will be in a better situation this time. People know better about when it comes to the administration part, Congress knows better and carry everybody together. But these parties are always been fighting. Time has come for a change.â said Dr AK Walia, Former Health Minister, Congress.
Yogendra Yadavâled Swaraj India has promised to solve work for environment related issues in Delhi. The party has also promised for re-categorization of colonies, recovery of tax including Delhi Development Authority (DDA), digitization by providing online facilities, adopting a citizenâs charter that will outline a timeframe for delivery of key services etc.
