Now that SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav has announced that he is still the party chief, a split in the party looked very likely as his son and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had unseated his father at meeting convened on January 1 and staked claim to the party symbol.
Mulayam accompanied by his close aides Amar Singh and Shivpal Yadav reached the Election Commission (EC), where he will stake claim to the party and its symbol, Â UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is slated to visit the commission later to present his side of the power struggle within SP and to claim the party ‘s ‘cycle’ symbol for his side, which has become personal fight for him.
On January 8, Mulayam had asserted he was âstill the national president of the party, Akhilesh was the Chief Minister and Shivpal was the chief of the state unitâ. Stating that the meeting where Akhilesh was elected party chief was illegal, he said Ram Gopal Yadav convened the meet after he was expelled by him.
Meanwhile, for violating the model code of conduct, a Samajwadi Party candidate has been taken into custody. His mistake: He had taken out a procession replete with loud speakers and DJ system sans permission.
Rashid Malik was detained for violating Section 144 and model code of conduct. Section 144 was already imposed in the district, when he violated it. He and his close aides, Ummed Pahalwan and Ahsan Ali were also taken into custody and kept in the Tronica police station, said Returning Officer of Loni constituency Prem Ranjan.
However after some time, Malik’s aides, Pahalwan and Ali were released after furnishing personal bonds of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50,000, respectively, said the police.
The entire stretch of Delhi-Saharanpur highway was blocked by the procession. Normalcy of traffic could only be restored after some time.
