Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on October 25 launch a unique service named ‘SMS Alert Service’, an e-initiative by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in Delhi.
Emphasising on the government’s commitment towards continuously upgrading tax payer services, he said this new step was an effort by the Income Tax Department (I-T) to communicate deduction of tax through SMSes to taxpayers at the end of every quarter.
Simultaneously, SMS alerts will be sent to deductors who have either failed to deposit taxes subtracted or to e-file their TDS returns by due date.
This move will benefit 2.5 crore salary cases. CBDT will soon extend this SMS facility to another 44 million non-salaried taxpayers. The rate of SMS alerts will be increased, once the process filing TDS returns is streamlined to receive such information in real time, said CBDT.
All those who wish to receive SMS alerts have been informed to update their cell numbers in their e-filing account. Also, Jaitley said e-Nivaran is working well for taxpayers and CBDT is taking several taxpayer-friendly initiatives.
