After the Congress party drew blank on the recently concluded Delhi Assembly Elections in 2015, fissures within the party have come to the fore. And facing the heat of the election loss is the Congress face of the campaign Ajay Maken. Maken has been accused of not taking other senior leaders of the Delhi Congress along during the poll campaign. This charge was made by none other than the three-time former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. While speaking to CNN-IBN Dikshit said, “I pity Maken. He lost focus and he never took us along.” It is well known in Delhi Congress circles that Dikshit and Maken never got along well. Dikshit came down heavily on her bĂȘte noire and charged him with never utilising her services for the Delhi elections. “If I was there, things would have been different,” she said.
The former chief minister also tried to defend Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for the party’s dismal show in the Delhi Assembly elections. “It is not right to point fingers at Rahul. After all, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah too lost,” she said.
The Congress did not get any seat in the Delhi elections even though it had contested on all the 70 seats. This is for the first time that the country’s oldest political party failed to open its account in an Assembly election which it contested. What is more humiliating s that 63 out of 70 candidates lost their deposits. A dramatic and stunning fall for a party which under Sheila Dikshit was at the helm for 15 years till December 2013
Meanwhile anguished over Dikshitâs hard comments, there are media reports that Congress’s Ajay Maken is all set to quit the Congress. Reports say that Maken is deeply hurt by the recent comments made by Sheila Dikshit. Dikshit had said that as the campaign head, Ajay Maken should have been aggressive.
