At a time when the BJP central leadership has been contemplating on making former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah, the General Secretary of the BJP, the arrest of GL Singhal on the afternoon of 21 February has come in as a huge setback to Modi and Shah. Tehelka which was the first to have reported and produced evidence of Singhal’s complicity had published specific IB inputs and progress reports by the CBI which put senior intelligence and anti-terrorist cops in the dock. This afternoon a team of CBI officials who had parked themselves in Gandhinagar for the last three days arrested Singhal and at the time of filing this piece, his official residence is being searched by the CBI. Singhal is not the only officer involved in the fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan who was killed on charges of being a Lashkar terrorist out to kill Narendra Modi. The CBI has already charged DG Vanzara and Rajkumar Pandian who are in CBI custody for their role in the fake encounter of Tulsiram Prajapati and Sohrabuddin.
A team of CBI officials is also in Mumbai to take requisite permission for the questioning of ex-encounter cops and IB officials from Maharashtra. When questioned about the role of Intelligence officials at the Centre, CBI officials told Tehelka that they are taking cognisance of the Intelligence inputs provided by Tehelka and the concerned officials have already been questioned. It must be noted that it was Tehelka whose evidence against Amit Shah in the form of call records and internal notes had led to the arrest of the first serving state Home Minister in the history of the country. Besides the Ishrat Jahan encounter, the CBI has also been given charge of three other encounters including Sadiq Jamal, Tulsi Ram Prajapati and Sohrabuddin fake encounter. The CBI is all set to arrest some more officials in the Ishrat Jahan case in Gujarat tommorrow.
